So I'm in the midst of a "discussion" over at The Deacon's Bench. The discussion goes with this post. I am angered by people who don't consider that their actions/words affect how people view situations.... Here are my words, in case they go away.
Carlos,More than once you have referred to Barack Obama as B. Hussain Obama. I find this attempt at using his name in order to cast aspersions on him as unchristian and I (and probably some others) am offended. It may be useful to you to review your Catechism (CCC 2158) which states, "God calls each one by name. Everyone's name is sacred. The name is the icon of the person. It demands respect as a sign of the dignity of the one who bears it."Having researched the name Hussain I found its meaning to be: Muslim: from the Arabic personal name ̣Husayn, a diminutive of ̣Hasān ‘good’, ‘handsome’ (see Hasan) (information which can be found here: http://genealogy.familyeducation.com/surname-origin/husain?detoured=1 )I'm sure our western names sound strange to those in other cultures. Using someone's name to encourage prejudice beyond unchristian, just plain rude. Whether or not you agree with Mr. Obama he still deserves the respect we are called to give to any human.I find that one of my crosses to bear is my shame that people who share my Catholicism can appear so unchristian to outsiders. It's no wonder that people take us for a bunch of hypocrites.Deacon, I appreciate that you quote from many sources and viewpoints (even when I find them to be overly conservative) I learn from them all.

Right, I agree to both of you who commented on my comment. BUT... what is a person's intention in referring to him as B. Hussein Obama? I'm sure Mr. Obama likes his name well enough but in my experience the people who are referring to him as Carlos does are buying into the name calling and trying to associate him with militant muslims. His name also has little to do with his promotion of anything. All I ask is that he is afforded the dignity we, as pro-life Catholics, demand of those unborn babies. What am I doing? {Sigh} I don't know why I bother sometimes.

M. William Smith doesn't sound as scary to ignorant people as B. Hussein Obama does. If Barack Obama used the name B. Hussein Obama it would be a whole different ball game. The fact that people "B. Hussein Obama" as a pejorative (having a disparaging, derogatory, or belittling effect or force) is not Christian. It is a shameful behavior and it makes those who utilize the propaganda tactic of namecalling cheapen their position and look less credible.Obama doesn't "love to kill babies". Disagree all you want with his stance on abortion but don't use hyperbole to further your views because you look even less credible. You can use facts to make a much better argument then by acting so immature.

Dear Mhari,
I agree with your comments regarding the use of B. Hussein Obama, and I also think that you propose decent advice.
The real problem, however, and the reason why people are responding to the similarities between Osama and Obama and Hussain and Saddam Hussein is that Senator Obama's political views regarding the unborn seem vicious and invite a comparison to the vicious acts of the men whose names sound like his.
It is not an anti-muslim impetus that gives rise to Carlos' tactic. It is a connection to the evil represented by terrorism and the evil represented by infanticide.
We owe Barack Obama the respect we offer to the unnamed and unborn children in the womb. We owe him the respect we owe to the wretchedly poor who curse us as we attempt to help them.
But we do not owe respect to Senator Obama, the lawmaker who would not vote for the Born Alive measures proposed in Illinois. His actions are considered ones, and he is a free and educated man who is using all his gifts in support of an intrinsic evil.
Maybe he is the one shaming his name.

Fair enough. I frankly, don't think either candidate will do much of anything about abortion after the election. I had a student who asked me the day after GWB was elected asked, "when will abortion laws change?" Had to explain that the president doesn't make laws. Doesn't help that the majority of our electorate is ignorant.
I refuse to be a one issue voter. I'm a strong proponent of education and social supports that would reduce abortions. Get rid of the demand.
oops...correction, change elected to re-elected
