Is the world coming to an end? {and who you callin' ho?}
I don't know where to start. Well, yes I do but I don't want to start there. On my professional facebook, one of my "friends" (honestly, some of these people aren't my friends, they're people I work with and to be "in the know" it's good to be F/B friends with them) posted a commercial from catholicvote.org. It offended the hell out of me. First, it shows President Obama, Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi, and other democrats with their faces blanked out. Second, it runs quotes from a variety of people who make me (Democrat that I am) roll my eyes. The worst thing, absolute WORST is that they use Martin Luther King Jr.'s words over battle scenes and flags and stuff "a fight for freedom". One of the commenters said exactly what I was thinking:
"Really? Not even the slightest hint of shame or sense of irony in setting audio of MLK over video of American military jets, veterans marching in a parade, and soldiers in uniform? King devoted his life to responding to injustice and murderous hatred with nonviolence. Do you not even have any sense of cognitive dissonance in invoking his words "free at last" to call for greater freedom from government intervention in the economy? King labored to promote economic justice including petitioning the government to intervene on behalf of the poor. To usurp his words to support a political platform of laissez-faire capitalism and militarism is dishonest, dishonorable, and despicable. Furthermore, it isn't remotely Catholic. Pope Benedict has repeatedly talked about the need for government to play a role in redistributing wealth, and nearly every word he has had to say about war has been to condemn it. He has called for nations to spend less on weapons and more on promoting justice for the poor."
What disturbed me the most was the thought that: No, they don't have any shame.
I am so so so so so guilty of judging Conservatives/Republicans. So many of them are LOL...the quote that came to mind from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade {to be read in Sean Connery's voice} "It tells me that goose-stepping morons like yourself should be reading books instead of burning them". Anyway....so many Conservatives/Republicans that I meet merely regurgitate what they have heard somewhere else.
GOD!! Even my co-worker -- who I like -- made the crack that Obama got elected because he was black. I just....ARGH!!....I can't even be articulate about it.
*sigh*
Anyway, the "commercial" or whatever the hell it is just drove home how I feel at my "work parish" versus the parish I go to when I'm at my parents' house. I don't feel Catholic enough at the work parish. I feel less than. I feel like a big fake. It's probably my fault, but I don't -- this would sound weird to my non-religious friends -- I don't feel God at my work parish as much as I feel him at the home church. Is it me? Is it the boss man? Is it a combination of the two? How can I not be Catholic enough when I think Christ was an awesome dude (not to mention fully divine and fully human)? How can I not be Catholic enough when I believe that we have a certain responsibility to take care of each other; To look after the widow and orphan; To care for the veteran and the elderly; To make sure that the have nots don't lose more? Shame on political parties for making this about them (don't you like how I went from religion to politics?? It's all a mishmash in my head).
My goodness this is rambly and a little nonsensical. I plead temporary insanity - have had around 10 hours of sleep in two days. I really want to post more again (she says for the 57,999 time). I think I may be driven to this year. Mull mull mull.
